Panama is a country in Central America bordering Colombia and Costa Rica. The Panama Canal connects the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans and is a major shipping waterway.

4.3 million people live in the country, with nearly half (1.9 million) living in capital, Panama City (CIA World Factbook, 2022).

Panama has one of the fastest growing economies in Latin America, despite this poverty and inequality are prevalent – 22.1% of people live below the national poverty line (World Bank, 2021).

Poverty disproportionately impacts the indigenous population, in 2019 47.2% were living in poverty. This is significantly higher than in other Latin American countries where the average is 19% (Statistica, 2021).

Poverty among children in Panama is also significantly higher than the average, more than half of children are poor and one fifth suffer malnutrition (Credit Agricole, 2021)

Youth unemployment has spiked because of the global pandemic, rising from 10.25% in 2018 to a high of 31.97% in 2020. It fell to 29.96% in 2021 but is still substantially higher than pre-pandemic levels (Statistica, 2021).
