AFRICA FOCUS: Bob Munro - A Legacy of Peace

On June 28th and 29th, Vijana Amani Pamoja (VAP), our Homeless World Cup Member Country in Kenya, will proudly host the Africa Women’s Cup. Brandon Green is currently in Nairobi to support preparations for the tournament. As part of his visit, he stopped by the MYSA Stadium to learn more about Kenya’s vibrant football culture and to support the Kenyan team during their training sessions.

Bob Munro was more than a sports fanatic; he was a visionary. He dreamed of giving people the chance to find freedom and peace through the game of football.

To visit MYSA Stadium is to witness the living imprint of a man I never met, yet whose spirit echoes in every cheer, every kick, and every heartbeat on the pitch. In his honor, local community members have gently scattered his ashes beneath a garden where avocado trees now grow, a living tribute to a life rooted in kindness.

The facility is more than just a football stadium; it is a sanctuary. It houses a fitness center, a full-sized football pitch, and a street soccer field where children and community members come together to play, watch, and belong.

The Kenyan women’s team, led by Coach Everlyne of Vijana Amani Pamoja (VAP), held a friendly match here in preparation for the upcoming African Women’s Cup. The boards of the pitch were lined with children from across Nairobi. Though the match was friendly, the energy was high, and the drive to grow was undeniable. MYSA and VAP have long stood side by side, united in their mission to use football as a force for good in the lives of Kenyans.

To capture the feeling of this pitch in words alone does not do it justice. But this story aims not only to raise awareness of Kenya’s vibrant football programs, but also to serve as a testament to what can be achieved when safe, inclusive spaces are built with the intention of growth, healing and expression.

As Bob once said, a message now painted on the mural that watches over the field, “There are no problems, only challenges.”

It’s a belief that speaks to the opportunity we share as a global community: to stop viewing societal issues as insurmountable problems, and instead as challenges waiting to be met. Real world solutions do not come from one person alone. They are born from our collective pursuit of a world rooted in peace and unity.

In memory of Bob Munro, a man I have never met, but a spirit in which lives in forever.
